Los Alamos fellow to ponder GPCR, Ra signaling

Dr. Chris Neale, director’s fellow at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Center for Nonlinear Studies, will give the Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Signaling Across the Plasma Membrane and Into Cells via GPCRs and Ras,” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, in classroom 3A.

Berlin professor to talk hormonal, sex-specific heart regulation

Dr. Georgios Kararigas, DZHK professor at the Institute of Gender in Medicine and the Center for Cardiovascular Research, Charite University Hospital, Berlin, Germany, will give the Women’s Health Research Center/Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Hormonal and Sex-specific Regulation of the Healthy and Diseased Heart,” at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in classroom 3A.

Dr. Mary Kate Fouquier, associate professor of nursing and director of the Lanier High School Teen Wellness Clinic, will serve as the discussion leader for the Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “School Based Health Centers to Advance Health Equity,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in conference room D on the second floor of the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited. The session is sponsored by the Myrlie Evers Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities. Continuing education credit is available.

Dr. Juanyce Taylor, chief diversity and inclusion officer, will kick off the 2017-18 UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science Seminar Series by presenting “Super Powers Aren’t Enough” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the second-floor conference center of the Norman C. UMMC faculty to talk pediatric mind health at CAY event

Dr. David Elkin, professor of psychiatry, Dr. Cynthia Field, assistant professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Monica Sutton, associate professor of pediatrics, will present “State of Mind: The Truth About Anxiety, Depression and Other Mood Disorders Facing Our Children and Youth” at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

The talk is presented by the Center for Advancement of Youth and the Junior League of Jackson. Supper will be available on a first-come basis at 6:15 a.m. Child care for children ages 3-10 will be available.

CDC division director to keynote annual 70v2020 conference

Dr. Lisa C. Richardson, director of the Center for Disease Control’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, will give the keynote address, “Moving Patients to Screening: Strategies to Reach the Unscreened,” for the 70x2020 Colorectal Screening Initiative’s annual conference, scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

Others scheduled to speak during the conference include Dr. John Ruckdeschel, UMMC Cancer Institute director and Ergon Chair in Cancer Research; Chigozie Udemgba, director of the Mississippi State Department of Health Comprehensive Cancer Control Program; Dr. John McKee, president of the Mississippi Gastroenterology Society; and Dr. Elizabeth North, head of the Mississippi State University Extension Service’s agricultural communications.

The 70x2020 Colorectal Screening Initiative is a statewide organization working to see 70 percent of eligible Mississippians screened for colorectal cancer by 2020. All Medical Center faculty and staff are invited. A light breakfast and lunch will be available.

Missouri professor to review receptor activation’s role in relaxation

Dr. James R. Sowers, professor of medicine and physiology, Thomas W. and Joan F. Burns Chair in Diabetology and director of the Center for Diabetes and Cardiovascular Health at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, will present “Role of Cell Specific Mineralocorticoid Receptor Activation in Cardiovascular Stiffness and Impaired Relaxation” at noon on Thursday, Oct. 26, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

The seminar is sponsored by the Mississippi Center for Obesity Research, the Cardiorenal and Metabolic Diseases Research Center and the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research.

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting

Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Vitter and Woodward will provide an update on the university and the Medical Center for the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include a recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.

The Excellence in Research Awards ceremony to honor UMMC faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves with exceptional research is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Norman C. Nelson Student Union.

A reception and tours of the new Translational Research Center will take place after the ceremony. All Medical Center faculty, staff anf students are invited.
